I think the largest physical hindrance to our church's growth would be the lack of space. Most notably lack of space in the parking lot. Our lot is generally full on Sunday mornings, but our building is not. And, we seem to lack space in our FLC. The rooms are barely large enough to house our growing children's ministry.
The biggest spiritual hindrance I see is a misplaced focus. Looking at the people in our church, I see a desire and even a passion to serve the Lord. I think that focus becomes a hindrance when we focus more on service than on our relationships with God. Service should be an overflow of our hearts after spending intimate time with Him. I see a lot of service in our church, but it doesn't seem to be because of overflow. I don't see evidence of much intimate time with God.
I think that for our church the largest physical hindrance would be that our church needs some updating...the foyer is not welcoming at all "it just says come on in have a seat we'll get started soon" instead of shouting "GLORY, WE'RE SO GLAD TO SEE YOU, ISN'T IT A BEAUTIFUL DAY GOD HAS GIVEN US TO WORSHIP IN, LET ME HELP YOU FIND A SEAT"!
Our santuary is really in need of a face lift too! If we are going to attract others to WANT to worship with us we need to make the church and grounds as attractive and as inviting as possible. I think most people are uncomfortable with change...we tend to adopt the attidtude that "it's been good enough all these years, why change it" Then we carry this same attitude over into our spritual lives. When new ideas for growth and worship are introduced we adapt that same "why change" attitude or "well", "I'm going to wait and see how this goes before I committ" attitude. Right from the start we are displaying negative attitudes before GOD. We become only half a support system, half a belief and faith system and half a praying body. We are already a small group so it makes it sometimes difficult to achieve our goals, but, when only half of that group is BELIEVING we CAN do it...it is even harder to achieve them, it may even make it impossible!
I agree with earlier comments about the small parking lot and the need to update the look of our sanctuary.
We need to look at things as if we were first time visitors. The draped cross is beautiful with the flowers.
Our sanctuary walls are dark and dreary looking - everything is brown or beige. Something with color would be a nice change for eye appeal. Even white would lighten things up.
The front stage area is plain but cluttered. We hide our musicians behind plants and candle holders. I would love to be able to see them as well as hear them.
Spiritually we lack unity as a church. If everyone would prepare their hearts for worship BEFORE coming to church we could feel an overflowing joy for the priviledge we have to able to come together to worship. Unity is the result of meeting with one accord - to worship and honor our Lord Jesus Christ.
